You will likely get far sicker if you catch a virus in the morning than if you are exposed later in the day.
Cambridge University has a new study in which they examined the effect of body clock rhythm on viral immunity.
Researchers discovered that viruses can multiply 10 times faster if they are injected into mice early in the day versus later. This is due to the body’s resistance to viruses is reduced in the morning.
The scientists said that the key to immunity is body clock rhythm, also called circadian rhythm. Mice were far more vulnerable to infection when their body clocks were disrupted, no matter the time of day.
Indeed, a study by other researchers has shown that people with body clock disruption, such as when they are jet lagged or work nights, are more vulnerable to illness.
Viruses attack by hijacking your cells, unlike bacteria, which can reproduce on their own. So the virus will more easily take hold if you are exposed to a virus in the morning when your cells are vulnerable.
One of the researchers on the study was Professor Akhilesh Reddy. He said that it’s a big difference. All the apparatus available at the right time is all that the virus needs, otherwise it might not ever get off the ground. A tiny infection in the morning might keep on going faster and take over the body.
His findings were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
