A Glass of Red Wine Daily Could Lower Risk of Polycystic Ovaries

The health benefits of moderate consumption of red wine have been indicated for the last several years.

It can reduce cancer risks and help prevent heart problems, and some studies even pointed out that it can help preserve brain function. A compound found in red wine, a new research revealed that, among other things, can also help lower your risk of developing PCOS – polycystic ovary syndrome.

PCOS is caused by imbalances in the reproductive hormones, which create problems for the ovaries. The syndrome is one of the most frequent hormonal endocrine disorders seen in women. From the Department of Human Health and Services, the Office on Women’s Health evaluates that approximately one out of every 10 women of childbearing age is affected by PCOS. As part of a healthy menstrual cycle, ovaries release an egg each month. For women with PCOS, this egg may not be released at all, or it may not develop as it should. This can contribute to or cause infertility – actually, it is the main cause of female infertility. The disruption of regular menses can also cause developing cysts on the ovaries.

Resveratrol is an antioxidant compound found in red wine and scientists now believe that has anti-inflammatory properties that may help to decrease a woman’s risk of developing PCOS. Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism recently published new research.

The study’s senior author Dr. Antoni Duleba, from the University of California, said that their study is the first clinical trial to find that levels of testosterone in PCOS patients’ are significantly decreased by resveratrol. It also lowers dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), a hormone released by the adrenal glands and the body can convert it into testosterone. He believes that resveratrol could help decrease hormone imbalances, which are an essential part of the condition.

To complete the study, a group of randomly chosen 30 women were assigned to one of two groups: a group that received a placebo and a group that received a resveratrol supplement. The participants were asked to take their supplement every day for three months. Blood samples from the study subjects were gathered by the researchers at the start and at the end of the study so that they could measure changes in androgen and testosterone. The women were also asked to participate in measuring diabetes risk by testing oral glucose tolerance.

What the researchers found was shocking. Fasting blood glucose levels of women who took the resveratrol supplements had a 31.8 percent decrease, suggesting that a dramatic drop in diabetes risk was provided by the nutrient.

This group of women also had testosterone levels that dropped by 23.1 percent, and DHEAS levels dropped by 22.2 percent. In the meantime, women taking the placebo saw their DHEAS levels increase by 10.5 percent, and their testosterone levels increase by 2.9 percent.

Dr. Duleba noted that the findings indicated that the body’s ability to utilize insulin could be boosted with resveratrol. He also said that the supplement may be able to help lower the risk of metabolic problems common in women with PCOS.

There are several other great sources of resveratrol in addition to red wine that can easily be consumed, even by those who want to abstain from alcohol. Excellent source of this miraculous nutrient are grapes, but also excellent choices are dark chocolate, blueberries, and peanuts.
